Must-read, December 30, 2008

I am a person with Ankylosing Spondylitis. Earlier this year I began looking for some professional information on AS. I belong to a group of very knowledgeable AS’ers and this was a book that some mentioned. I couldn’t afford to buy it and had to borrow it through my local library. It came from the health collection of a collegiate library three states away!!!

Professional medical literature is usually difficult to understand, and I won’t pretend to say I followed everything in the book. However, I got a good sense of what doctors have learned, where the state of research stands, and what the future could hold.

So much has been written about rheumatoid arthritis, but AS seems to be a disease where it’s hard to get research funded at times. I recommend this book to all physicians. Like all types of arthritis, AS is a hidden disease and it can be mistaken for fibromyalgia, degenerative back disease, or osteoarthritis. Knowing that there are different manifestations/presentations to AS can help physicians stay up to date, but also help physicians maintain the trust of their patients. For many AS’ers this is a HUGE issue.

I also recommend this book to individuals who have been diagnosed with AS or who are looking for answers. I realize that some physicians are uncomfortable with the idea that a patient may offer opinions guided by what they have read or learned, but this can be an opportunity for a physician and patient to enter into a mutually beneficial relationship.

The length makes it a book that can be read and digested in short segments. For those of us who may need to consult an online dictionary, it’s doable. For practitioners who lead busy lives, again, the book is doable.

The price makes it more difficult to buy for some of us, but it is worth reading. For those who practice medicine, consider adding it to your private library or the shared library in your practice. Your patients won’t regret it and neither will you.

My Sheltie, Maggie, has a slipped disc. She is resting now, and thanks to a great Vet I can tell that she is not in as much pain and seems to rest a lot better now.
